Kai leading a squadron of Brunnen-G Moths.

Yo Way Yo is a song frequently sung by Kai. The song is known only in an ancient and long forgotten language of the Brunnen-G, and its exact translation and meaning are unknown. At the time of the fall of the Brunnen-G people, the song is sung by their warriors in battle, and is most famously known to be sung during the Brunnen-G suicide attack on the Foreshadow, flagship of the Divine Order, shortly before it destroys the planet.

In "Brigadoom" (season 2, episode 18) we learn that it is specifically sung when the warriors do not expect to survive the battle. Through the theatrical performance we learn the young of Brunnen-G defy the population to fight the foreshadow- rather than submit, they go forth to a "good death" as their ancestors did against the insects. One might infer Yo Way Yo is a battle cry for a "good death". Kai also discusses the song with the preacher in "The Rock" (s4, e6).

In "Trip" (s4, e22) Kai sings in English to the Yo Way Yo tune: "if this should be our final stand, we will stand together with pride, we will honor the past and fight to the last, it will be a good way to die. This moment will live on through time, if anyone ever asks why, The Brunnen-G did not fall on their knees, you will know they found a good way to die"

For the episode with the same name, see Yo Way Yo (episode).

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Kai sings an Irish interpretation of the song in Lexx 4.6 "The Rock"
  • Michael McManus (the actor who plays Kai) is an accomplished pianist, and the versions you hear Kai play in "The Rock" are versions that McManus arranged and played himself.[1]
  • The opening credit version has Marty Simon and his choir mixed in together. The live Kai singing in his spacecraft in Lexx 1.1 "I Worship His Shadow" has Michael’s voice mixed in with the choir of five other males.[2]
