The Dark Zone (sometimes called the Dark Universe) is one of the two primary, parallel universes in Lexx. The Dark Zone is widely considered by the peoples of the Light Zone to be the universe of darkness and depravity, although it is unclear if this is simply propaganda, as the Light Zone is a largely unpleasant place in its own right.

History and Appearances

“Only a thin dimensional barrier separates us from the festering evil, the malignant depravity and alien chaos of the Dark Zone. The Dark Zone is not separate, like two different planets. The Dark Zone coexists in the same space as our universe, in the same place, at the same time. The Dark Zone has no rules, no sense, no order. We give thanks to His Divine Shadow for his ceaseless vigilance, protecting our universe of light and order from the horrors and disorder of the Dark Zone. We worship His Shadow. Long may he reign” — Lexx 1.1 "I Worship His Shadow"

The Lexx and its crew first enter the Dark Zone at the end of Lexx 1.1 "I Worship His Shadow" when they escape the Cluster by passing through a Fractal Core. The Lexx crew only visit Brunnis-1 and Klaagia during their initial visit to the Dark Zone, before returning to the Light Zone to try and retrieve more Protoblood for Kai. After the destruction of the Cluster and defeat of the Giga Shadow the Lexx crew return to the dark zone only briefly before returning to the Light Zone again in Lexx 1.4 "Giga Shadow" when Kai, under the control of the Giga Shadow's insect essence urges them to visit Mantrid's World with a dormant offspring of the Giga Shadow.

After the events of season 2 unfold and the Light Zone is destroyed by Mantrid Drones, the crew of the Lexx are returned to the Dark Zone at the end of Lexx 2.20 "End of the Universe". As Kai's knowledge of the Dark Zone is limited, and Lexx's energy is low, the crew put the Lexx into deep sleep, and enter cryochambers for themselves, leaving the Lexx to drift until it reaches a suitable planet. It eventually reaches an orbit with Fire and Water, where it remains for the duration of season 3.

After Fire and Water are both destroyed by the Lexx's main weapon, the crew discover Earth in an opposite orbit, previously obscured by the sun. This is where the remainder of series 4 takes place, before Stanley Tweedle and Xev leave for good after Earth's destruction, boarding the Little Lexx and on to unknown adventures in the largely intact Dark Zone.
